Biceps Tendon Tears

The biceps tendon attaches the biceps muscle to the shoulder and to the elbow. Therefore, the tendon can tear in two places: from the elbow or inside the shoulder. Often a tear in the biceps occurs with a popping or tearing sensation. A torn biceps can cause a bulge in the arm.

Without surgery, a tear in the biceps tendon will not heal. For this reason, most patients choose to have the tendon repaired. Repair is a simple outpatient procedure performed through a small incision. If you think you tore your biceps, it is generally better to be evaluated right away. Delays can cause surgery to become difficult or impossible.
